The neck is off again! It was real easy this time since I didn't use a lot of glue. 30 seconds of steam on both sides and I pushed it out with the neck jig. I turned down the steam this time to hopefully get less finish blushing, which somehow backfired. I got more!! But some real cool patterns!!! As they say, "That'll buff out!".
Now I will wait 2 days before looking at it again, although I'll probably polish out the blushing before then.
After waiting 2 days I checked the neck fit and it was a few thousandths away from perfect. I used the hair dryer and Meguiar's to remove the blushing. Undercut the heel more. Checked the back of the dovetail, plenty of clearance in the neck pocket. The neck projection looks to be the same as before I took the neck off, .06"/.07" above the bridge. I set the tape on the heel at .010", filed & sanded to the tape. The neck now projects .09"/.10" above the bridge. That should do it! Now the dovetails shims are slightly loose, added a little superglue and sanded slightly, perfect fit. Glued the neck on with fish glue again again! If there's a heel gap tomorrow I'm calling Ghostbusters!!!
NO HEEL GAP!!! All I got done today was to file the nut slots slightly to finished the nut action. The string action is right on the money, 5/64" low E & 1/16" high E.
Today I tapped in and glued the 15th fret with thin superglue, starting by waxing the fretboard so the glue didn't stick to it, then clamping it with a radius block for a few minutes. They I added black marker to the tops of the 14th thru 16th fret, crowned, sanded & polished.
Then I oiled & scrubbed the frets & fretboard, and finished the nut.
First wipe!
Then I put tape & alignment marks on the bridge & saddle, made a symmetrical pencil line on the bass side of the saddle, sanded to the line, and rounded the ends.
Then I cleaned & installed the truss rod cover, and added 2 small dabs of Titebond & glued in the nut.
