I have a 1971 FG-180 Red Label Nippon Gakki that I believe was purchased in late summer 1971. It is Serial No. 1600732. The date code on the interior side of the guitar is very hard to read as it was very poorly stamped. The year did not take but the month and day are 4 23. This seems to check with all of the date information that I see in your initial post.
I purchased the guitar from my next-door neighbor in the late spring of 1972 for $120, as I recall. We were both poor college students at the time and he needed to liquidate his assets as he ran out of money at the end of the school year. His loss was my gain as I have kept and played this guitar for over thirty years. I replaced the worn out Yamaha tuning machines many years ago with some inexpensive machines from a catalogue. The Yamaha had become rather difficult to play over the years and, even though I had work done to improve the action, about ten years ago I was seduced by a very pretty Samich Greg Bennett Design Acoustic/Electric, which was very easy to play and nice to look at. But the old Yamaha completely blew it away in terms of acoustic tone and volume.
I had the work done on the Yamaha to improve the action and dress the frets. The nut was replaced and things were adjusted to where the neck was put back in correct adjustment and the playability was much improved. The Yamaha has been pretty much stored since I got the Greg Bennett guitar.
I have been in a quandary about what to do with the Yamaha, being aware of the value, condition and quality of this instrument, I decided to keep it in the family and give it to my nephew, a piano player who is currently in flight training as a Marine aviator. He is playing an inexpensive Ibanez guitar with his roommates now, so I hope that this fine vintage guitar will be a blessing and an inspiration to master the guitar.
