HIS STORY: There’s not much of a story. He bought it from the original owner, who bought it new in the summer of 1971 before heading off to college.
OBSERVATIONS: Shipped 11/3/22. Received 11/5/22. That’s really good time from upper Michigan to central CT!! The new Yamaha case was packed with a box inside a box, with the case wrapped in thin foam. In the case, the guitar had bubble wrap on the top, around & under the neck, and some small blocks of Styrofoam blocking the body from moving. An excellent packing job! And even better, there is a return FEDEX label. I think I will be requesting this in the future, since money transfer apps are now required to report to the IRS once a $600 threshold has been reached, which doesn't take long. Otherwise, I'd have to add 16% to the shipping cost so I don't lose money on it. The guitar is in great shape, with only a few minor dings and scrapes. The frets look nearly unplayed, with a couple leveled low, I'll check more after the neck is off. The tuners are stiff, probably need lubing. There are some pick marks on the pickguard, and a few carrying onto the body. The strings are steel and measure .011" to .051". The closest I can find are electric .011" to .050", called Medium or Heavy. I tuned it to "D" (to save the strings). The nut action is actually high!! That's the first time I've ever seen that! The neck relief is a little high. With a .013" feeler capoed at the first fret (to simulate approx. proper nut action), the action is 9/64" low D & 1/8" high D. The bridge is .32" high. The saddle sticks out .08"/.09".
A brand new Yamaha case.
Initially, it looks new!!
It still looks new!
Doesn't everyone have scalpels on their worktable??
The nut looks like it just came from the factory! They're normally darker.
No fret wear.
Minty!!
FINALLY, you can see signs it was played!
It looks like it was dragged on the floor once or twice.
The saddle is a wee bit low!
Not much break angle.
INTERNALLY, it looks like a new vintage Yamaha, including the blown out soft spruce bridge plate. They drilled the holes without backing them up, and that makes a mess.
The bridge plate. I'll add a 1/16" thick hard maple plate over it, then drill & taper ream thru.
Oddly, the date code (46.3.17) is one month earlier than I'd expect for this serial number, based on the pairs I have recorded.
It looks like there's a date code on the other side, but I can't read it.
This is the same NWM stamp I've seen on some Red labels. I assume it's a stamp put on by the importer.
