The purpose of the Neck Support is hold the neck steady while inspecting the frets, or fretboard, for flatness with a straight edge during fret or fretboard leveling. Previously I would hold the neck in my left hand, WITHOUT my fingers going above the fretboard (and block my view of the frets), lay the straight edge across the frets, look for any very fine gaps, while trying to hold everything steady. MANY times during fret leveling. It was causing tendinitis in my left wrist.
It’s made from 2x2, 2x3, plywood, and a 3D printed plate with the Yamaha internal dovetail to hold the neck steady. A support near the nut area locates the other end. The whole assembly sits well on my work table, but clamping it is a good idea, just in case.
Once again, necessity is the mother of invention. Building this has saved me time, frustration, and pain.
I made a 3D model of it, and a PDF of it is available HERE. My neck rest doesn't match the model exactly (off center) because my original version used an actual neck block section from a vintage FG, so the upper piece was longer. Then I realized I had 3D modeled a few neck joints. I just picked the largest one (there were some slight variations), 3D printed it, the screwed it to a piece of wood.
Sorry for the messy work table.
I may shorten the neck rest slightly to get the neck parallel.
I didn't straighten the neck for the picture.
This neck came from a FG-110 that was REALLY played!!
