When I got my 1970 FG-300 it came with the original hard case AND the original truss rod wrench in it's original bag. Ignore the funky thumb pick that came with it.

This is an important find because I hadn't been able to find the right tool to adjust the nut. I couldn't get enough torque with a nut driver and it looks like move available similar tools (from luthier supply stores) are too long to fit in the pocket to be able to get full adjustment. I will continue to look to find something similar in the future.

This wrench looks very close to the Yamaha wrench. We'll see in a few days.

The AllParts wrench works! But it's .825" long, it just barely fits in the pocket of the (4) vintage FG's I tried it in.

Well I guess is will be my first tool purchase for my new career in vintage Yamaha acoustic guitar restoration haha. I ended up getting an FG-75 because it will be for my wife & it's a small guitar but more importantly it was the cheapest vintage Yamaha I could find, as you probably know they can go for really inflated prices. Anyway it came in today & of course the truss rod nut is frozen so I applied some PB Blaster to it, will now order the wrench you found & see if I can work it loose. Naturally it also needs a neck reset & while I gave your fine document a quick glance, I didn't want to get too far into it yet & risk early discouragement

First things first....the truss rod. Thanks again for all this valuable information you provide at zero cost!

Well I was able to free up the seized truss rod nut w/o the tool. Have you ever tried boring out the hole that houses the truss rod nut to gain a little extra depth? I'm thinking I may need to do that as this neck has a bit of a forward bow in it that may need a little extra turn or two to straigten. Somewhere I saw a video of how to do that but lost the link to it lol....btw this guitar was bought sight unseen, in case you hadn't guessed by now

On some I've seen a metal plate in the pocket for the nut to push on. If you're bottomed you'll need to modify some #10 flat washers to fit in the pocket. That will push the nut out farther, giving you more adjustment. There's a chance tightening the nut may just be burying the nut and plate into the neck until you run out of travel. That's why I made the backbowing block. It isn't easy to make but it works great.

I downloaded the engineering drawing for the backbowing block....thank you, I'm sure it comes in handy. I have done something like that before but used the rectangular aluminum bar stock that one can buy at the big box stores. It seemed to do a decent job so if I can find it I will probably try that again. Maybe today, idk my wife may have other ideas

I believe I used some hardwood blocks I had lying around to elevate the bar stock above the fretboard some. In any case the guidance you provide to newcomers to this is invaluable!

The advantage of my block is you can use it with the strings on, since you need to check the neck relief with full string tension. And it works with a variety if string spacings.
