I used my new Stew Mac cordless guitar light and my USB endoscope to take a look around inside the FG-110E. I was wondering what the value of the tone capacitor is and how the pickup is mounted. The 2MP endoscope, with actual 0.3MP, gave me these pics.
The 223K50 marking on the capacitor decodes to 0.022uF +-10% 50V.
I found an interesting article about that mentioned the high capacitance values of older guitars, resulting in dark bassy tones with most of the adjustment happening in the 10 to 8 range on the pot. Since the output of guitar pickups is in the microvolt range, the voltage rating of the capacitor is meaningless. Finding low 50V caps seems to be difficult. The most common ones for guitars are Sprague "Orange Drop", which seem to come in 200V, 400V, 600V values, meant to be used in amps. The higher the voltage rating, the more insulation that has to be inside, so they're bigger.
So I've got to do more research to see where I can find a few different values for cheap. I have 2 of these to work on. I may have to find 1 of a few values and get one more of the preferred value. WHERE'S A LOCAL RADIO SHACK WHEN YOU NEED THEM???!!! They actually sell the exact 0.022uf 50V for $0.78 (and other values), but there aren't any stores left in CT. The nearest one is over an hour away!
I ended up ordering them online from Radio Shack, 2 each of 0.022uF, 0.047uF, 0.1uF & 0.22uF. $14.62 including tax and shipping.
