I saw this on CraigsList less than an hour after the semi-local music store put it up. "Used Fender FG-75 Acoustic Guitar - $189" Fender?? Looks like a vintage Yamaha to me!! I didn't jump at it right away. I don't NEED another guitar. $189 is a little more than my normal rescue prices I've paid lately. So I figured I'd run over there at lunch time the next day and try to haggle them down to $150. I schmoozed with the old guy behind the counter, then looked around at the acoustic guitars, looking at this one LAST, even though I saw it earlier, not wanting to look interested. I picked up a Guild OM-120E first, not impressed. Then I picked up the FG-75-1, earlier noticing it has an embroidered YAMAHA strap!! COOL!! I pointed out the action is really high and asked if he could do any better. He looked it up and found it is on consignment and there is no lower number, no wiggle room. SO I did exactly what I said I wasn't going to do. I paid full price!! $201 out the door. The cool strap was the key. I've never seen one like it!
Actually, the guitar is actually in really good shape, with some fine strum marks on the top and a little buckle rash on the back. The frets look to be original, non-flattened, and barely worn!! While it's more than I wanted to pay (I don't NEED IT!!), the strap is ultra cool!! And it's one of my favorite vintage Yamaha models, a real sleeper. It also came with an original truss rod wrench and (2) picks that look like my favorite.
Doing a closer inspection I find the nut action is actually good to a little high!! Very rare, the slots are usually worn down from decades of tuning. Tuned a 1/2 step down the action is 5/32" low E & 9/64" high E. The neck projects 3/32" below the top of the bridge, with a 1/32" gap in the middle. The bridge is .24" high (original) and the saddle sticks out .11"/.09". There's absolutely no way to make it playable without a neck reset. The bridge has fine cracks between the pin holes and a slight chip lifting next to the low E. There's damage to the finish around the endpin from the vinyl backing on the cool strap.
It's pretty clean!
Some fine pic scratches.
The action is a bit high.
Not too bad back here.
CLEAN neck!
THE STRAP!!
There's finish damage from the vinyl backing on the strap.
There will be more pictures when I take the strings off. The frets are original and in great shape. The inside looked pretty clean except for a couple of dust bunnies. I don't expect to find any markings in there.
