Earlier this year I did a customer neck reset on a 1960’s Harmony H1260 Sovereign, the common 6 string version, it was passed down to him from his aunt. He said he’d love to have the 12 string version (H1270), but they aren’t very common. I finally found one on Shopgoodwill, I won it, and I fixed it up for him. It is a very odd guitar, a 12 fret 12 string with a double saddle (the rear saddle sets the string spacing), floating bridge, and a trapeze tailpiece. It was quite a challenge. And I was impressed with it. So I kept watching for another one. I found this one, also on Shopgoodwill. It went for less than the first one I found, I assume because the pictures showed there are 3 screws & gears missing from the treble side tuners. Where would you find replacement parts or tuners for a 50+ year old guitar?? But when I was working on the first H1270 I found Stew Mac’s Golden Age Restoration Tuners for 12-String Slotted Peghead Guitar $80) should drop in, with possibly having to open the shaft holes slightly, and probably having to drill new mounting screw holes, but the shaft center distances looked the same.
After receiving the guitar I found much of what was shown in the pictures. No strings, missing (3) tuner gears, bridge & truss rod cover off but included, the pickguard is missing. I ordered 2 sets of D’Addario EJ37 (medium top, heavy bottom) strings, planning on tuning it to “D”. The guitar shipped 10/8. I ordered the tuners from Stew Mac 10/9. And I received the guitar and tuners 10/14. Finish crazing all over. Lots of dings, many damaging the lacquer making them look worse. Minor divots in the 1st & 2nd frets. The neck projects approx. 3/16" above the top, but the fret level is all over the place, the neck projection is probably much worse. With the notched straightedge the fretboard is low between the nut & 1st, and tapers away after the 8th, getting much lower after the 12th. Level or refret?? Wait until after the neck is removed to decide.
She's not pretty.
Short 12 fret neck.
UH OH!! 3 gears missing!!!
No other marking inside. No date stamp. I'm guessing mid 60's because of the style of tailpiece.
MASSIVE internal bracing. The flat brace is the bridge plate.
There are 2 more braces beyond the bridge plate!!
