Hi CTGull, All,
I recently rescued a Yamaha FG-110 (red label) from a destination with the dump... it was "for free" or going out in the trash.
Couldn't let that happen, so I snagged it.
I'm questioning the wisdom of that decision.... It's been hard-used, and I'd be surprised if it's ever seen the inside of a case, or even a bag.
It's missing the bridge piece, two pegs, the truss-rod cover, and the nut looks suspicious, like it's too thick and at the wrong angle... but by far its worst problem is the heel-neck-body joint (of course...)
It's cracked in (at least) two places, and some clown decided the best way to fix that was to run a *carriage bolt* through it! With glue, no less....
I figure I've got nothing to lose here, so I'd like to try to give it not a professional-level, but decent repair, and learn something in the process. I've been in need of an interesting project, and this looks like it!
I understand the tapered dovetail-joint Yamaha uses... but I'm totally in the dark as to where to locate the hole(s) and at what angles, to introduce steam into the joint to separate the neck from the body. I've spent some time on YouTube, but that can be dangerous with nothing else to go on.... I read here that the joint is NOT under the 15th fret (or did I read that wrong?), so where exactly is it? What can I measure from as a reference to get the holes 'close enough' to do the job?
I have a fairly broad range of mechanical and woodworking skills, as well as electrical and electronics (though those aren't of much use here), so I don't think this is outside my range of capabilities... just well outside my range of experience. I know enough to know that I don't know enough, which is why I'm checking in here before I start swinging hammers
I've attached a couple of pics, pics being better than a books' worth of words.
I appreciate anything you'd care to share! Thanks!!
Karl
