Hello. I've bought a FG-365S which is quite beat up, dented and scratched. It needs a full overhaul. Does anyone have knowledge of what type of finish it has? I would like to refinish in the same material. I've searched a few times and no one seems to agree on what finish Yamaha used. And I'm personally interested mainly in 70's FG's. Thanks James

I know the earlier models are lacquer. They made lots of changes starting in 1981, most of them not for the better. It's possible they could have changed from lacquer, but I don't know. I have a scrap FG-365S neck. I just touched a lacquer pen to it and it didn't seem to soften the finish, so I'd have to assume it's polyurethane.
Thanks CT. I thank you for all the Yamaha info youve put on the web. I'm still reading thru it all. That reminds me that the neck on my guitar is crooked also; it warps down so the high E string doesnt have a lot of landing room. So I will try to rig up some sort of clamping system with some heat and push it back over. I got a bit burned on this purchase and figure I'm left with a guitar to begin my guitar repair adventures! Thanks again. James C
Ive got another question about the finish. When "Polyurethane" is refered to... is that a 2-part catalyzed poly? Or is this an evaporative, wipe-on type poly? And can anyone recommend a product that would work well?

The best (but not easiest) way to fix a slightly warped neck is to pull all the frets, level the fretboard, and refret. I do this to most vintage Harmony acoustics without an adjustable truss rod. If the action is high and the saddle is very low it needs a neck reset. I would do both at the same time.

I'm only guessing. I doubt anyone is sure what they used 40+ years ago.
If your holding the guitar in playing position, the headstock warps towards the floor! Not a back bow.
That is odd! Are you sure the neck just wasn't installed off center (the center of the neck not pointing at the center of the bridge)?? I've seen that many times. I'm about to start a neck reset on a customer Harmony H1260, the neck is more than 1/32" off center at the 12th fret. I fix this during the neck reset by taking a little wood off one whole side of the heel face to rotate the neck back into position.
You can see it here. In reality it's a little worse than the picture.
