Hello all,
I was alerted to this forum by a member of the Telecaster forum of which I'm a member (TDPRI.com).
A little about myself first, then I'll show some pictures of the guitar and explain the dilemma!
I'm 62 living in New Zealand and I have only been playing for about 5 years or so. I did play when I was at school, but 'wine, women and song' got to be a distraction and I dropped out of playing. Currently I have an Epiphone acoustic, and a Harley Benton T style guitar with humbuckers. I love them both. I'm in the process of completely rebuilding Tele knock off, but I'm putting a Kiwi flavour into it, including some New Zealand native wood which is anywhere from 500 to 2,000 years old. I have other woodworking (non musical) on the go as well, so I'm pretty busy.
On to the Yamaha. An elderly lady friend has gifted to me an absolutely beautiful Yamaha FG 412 SB which dates back to 1978, as far as I can tell. It's in wonderful condition except (you know where this heading I bet!), it needs a neck reset. It's unplayable above the 4th fret and the action at the soundhole end is high enough to drive bus under! I'll try and post some pics below. I've seen Ted Woodford cut the neck off an FG and make it a bolt on as the necks (so it seems) from this period may well be epoxied on....but I don't know that for sure. My research has come across a dozen of so FG's that need a neck reset, and in all but one case, the necks were cut off and made into a bolt on. I don't believe that I have the skills to do that, and In all honesty, I don't want that for this guitar. A neck reset would likely cost in the region of $1,000 in NZ, and that's assuming I can find someone competent enough to do the job.
That's the basics of the problem, and I don't have time to dedicate to this project for the rest of the year, so I have lots of opportunity to do some research in the approaching winter evenings.
Cheers,
Neil
