Hi folks!
Thanks to CTGull for creating this forum and sharing all this wealth of knowledge! Boy, do I need this as I start a new chapter in my life with my FG-300!
I'll start with an executive summary for those who are just curious to know what I now know to be very lucky to own. Santa Claus had a very good year in 1975 and he decided to share some of his good fortune with the Stevens brothers that year. He brought a go-cart for my very young brother, a Honda CB360 motorcycle for my middle brother, and a shiny new Yamaha FG-300 guitar for me! We were all shocked as this far exceeded any of our previous Christmases and one we will never forget.
I played this guitar for many years to follow, but eventually dropped out of playing music after getting married, having a couple kids, and decided I had to do something more lucrative for the family. The guitar sat in my closet until my oldest son got interested in playing music and took it with him when he went to college about 20 years ago.
Now I am getting close to retirement and have been feeling that growing musical hole in my life, so I decided to jump back in. I bought a midi keyboard controller and Presonus Studio One DAW software and now working on getting my chops back. I also have an Alvarez AD222 acoustic guitar and started learning how to work on guitars to get it set up properly. Then I decided I had to get a Stratocaster (gotta have an electric for most of the songs I want to record!), something I've wanted all my life, but didn't want to spend a couple grand for the real thing, so I decided to build my own from a kit. Just waiting for the clear coat to cure now so I can start sanding and buffing and finish the build.
As I was researching how to work on guitars, adjusting string heights, dressing frets, etc., I thought I would do a search on FG-300s just to see how they've weathered the years. Boy, was I surprised to learn how well regarded these guitars appear to be now and shocked to see how much they are now selling for! So, I contacted my son to see if he was still playing my guitar. He admitted he had stopped playing and is sending it back to me. I can't wait to get it back and start working on getting it back in shape!
I do recall that there was some belly bulge that I will probably have to address. My son sent me a few pictures yesterday and I see that the original pic guard is coming loose. That's all I know at the moment, but I'm sure there will be more work to do. I'm thrilled to have found this forum to help me know how to do this work correctly!
My parents really didn't know anything about guitars when they went shopping for one that Christmas, but the music store owner told them that the FG-300 he had in stock was a really nice guitar for the price and that this one was the last time Yamaha would be building production guitars with the rosewood side and back. Little did they know how nice it really was and how well it would hold its value in the decades since then.
Thanks again for the add and thanks for reading. Here's a couple pics for now:
