Recently acquired a 1970 FG150 Im getting up to snuff. The pick guard is half peeled off. I ordered the 3M double sided tape from Stewart Mack they recommend for reattaching the guard. Im going to have to gently (maybe heat first) the remainder and peel it off.

My question is- what solvent is safe to remove the old glue without hurting the finish underneath? I have denatured alcohol, lacquer thinner, and xylene all on the shelf. Any pointers appreciated-

The reason the pickguards on the vintage Yamaha's come off is there is only a small rim of finish around the edge of the pickguard, the rest is bare wood. The adhesive doesn't stick to the wood. And over time the pickguards shrink, pulling away from the glue.

Any solvent that might remove the glue will damage the finish. I scrape it off with a razor blade.

I've written an article on how to do that but I need to add pictures. It takes time, but the pickguard will never come off.

Hey thats great, thank you! I should have everything handy thats needed- Im new to guitars but not woodwork. Do you use the shellac straight from a can- or do you cut it with denatured alcohol and thin it first?

Thanks!! There was so much misinformation out there. Well, there still is. I wanted to figure it all out for myself and share what I find. Still research and learning!!

I use it straight from the can. You want to build it up.
