His story: I have been looking for a red label Yamaha FG for a while. I owned a 80’s FG335 for a while and wasn't particularly impressed by it. I sold it and used the money to buy this Yamaha FG150.
I found the guitar on Craigslist and agreed to meet the seller in Westfield, NJ with $160 dollars in my pocket. I drove about an hour from Ridgewood, Queens. We met on a rainy Sunday morning at a closed music store. The guy selling the guitar actually went to college in the same sleepy town I moved to New York from Gainesville, Florida. He said he had a few Martins and this guitar was just collecting dust in his barn.
The story goes this Yamaha FG150 was bought in either late ‘69 or early ‘70. The seller’s brother purchased it from his friend at their dorm somewhere in NJ. I’m unsure if it was heavily gigged or used for any recording but what I do know is the past owners loved this guitar. It has a beautiful wear pattern along the sound hole and along the body. It looks like it has been played everyday during the 50 years of it’s life. Hopefully, after it gets a neck reset and some TLC it’ll go on and be played for another 50 years to come.
My notes: Pickup up at Sam Ash New Haven. He's asked for 1.44" strings spacing at the nut, and slot saddle for 2.09" string spacing. Very clean, some play wear on the top but not many dings, small patch of buckle rash on the back, deep divots in the fretboard in the first 3 frets w/some higher up, small divots in the first 3 frets for B & E, some cracks in the bridge with a chunk missing between A & D, the strings are slightly off center towards the treble side. Screws holding the G tuner are not original. Tuned 1/2" step down. The nut action is low except for the E's. The neck relief is good. The neck projects 1/8" below the bridge with a .02" gap in the middle. The action is a little under 1/8" low E & 7/64" high E. The bridge is .27" thick, with .08"/.06" saddle sticking out.
DEEP craters!!
A few chunks of saddle missing.
