A couple of months ago I did a neck reset (and a few other fixes) on his 1960's Harmony H1260, a family heirloom that was passed down to him from his Aunt. yamahavintagefg.boards.net/thread/403/customer-repair-harmony-sovereign-h1260 He mentioned he'd love to have the 12 string version. They're aren't very common but I found one on Shopgoodwill.com last month. It looked to possibly be a little rough, very dirty, and the heel cap is shriveled. It didn't come cheap either. But it was a risk worth taking.
Today I finally arrived. It was 95 degrees outside and who knows how hot in the truck. I put the box in a cool room and waited 45 minutes and the box was cool. I opened it and the inside was cool. It was packed exceptionally!!
It gets better!!! Other than being very dirty and the pickguard missing, it looks to be unplayed!!!!!! The frets and strings are very oxidized have no signs of being used. There are no pick marks on the top AT ALL!!! They must be the original strings from 50 years ago!!
There is a little finish crazing on the top, not bad. There is a possible bit of drop damage in the rear end block area in a couple of spots, noticeable by a slight bulge.
This is a very unusual 12 string. It's not only a 12 fret, it has 2 saddles, one the strings rest on, the other sets the string spacing. The main saddle is very odd, it looks like it's barely set into the bridge!! And it's flat on top!! And it's parallel to the front of the bridge, NO COMPENSATION!! I think the bridge is slightly tipped (compensation), but I don't know if it's glued down, there's a line and a shadow about 1/8" behind it. I assume the saddles are glued in so they don't tip. I'm thinking the saddle slots will need to be deepened to support a slightly taller saddle, the main saddle only sticks out 3/32", rather low I'd like to see close to double that (5/32"?) for the future.
The heel cap is not only cracked, it's shriveled and about to pop off. It'll match his H1260!!!
A brand new box, that I can use to ship guitars!
Stuffed with paper, although the guitar was shifted to one side.
The bubble wrap cocoon.
They even put cardboard between the strings and the fretboard.
I have to figure out how to remove the old pickguard adhesive, just in case we can't find a replacement pickguard.
The 2 saddles.
No pick marks at all!!
Some finish crazing, from hot/cold cycles.
A slight center seam separation.
High action, although it's going to be worse once I tune it.
No buckle rash at all!! A few minor handle scratches and what looks to be some sticky stuff.
There looks to be some mold on the sides.
A minor binding separation.
And some possible drop damage.
The saddle look to be barely set in the bridge, especially the main saddle. They will probably need to be deepened.
And the shriveled heel cap.
The shadow behind the bridge. Is it glued down?
