I won this from the semi-local (2 towns over, 20 minute drive) Goodwill distribution store. I’ve won probably 6 guitars from there, looked at a few more, and donated some guitars and stuff, but I hadn’t been there in over 2 years. I sent a message asking if I could pick it up the next day and Ken replied quickly. When I got here Ken came out and said him and Jess were talking 4 days ago wondering where the guitar guy from Wallingford was. FATE??? They just haven’t had anything interesting in a long time. I had been wanting to find a decent H165 for a while, although I’ve found the nearly identical 1966 Silvertone 623 and 1972 Harmony H6365. I didn’t notice it was this location until just before I bid on it.
Even though it doesn’t have any internal markings, by the headstock logo (has the gold clef) and no truss rod (added 1968), I’m guessing between 1963 and 1967. The pickguard is missing. Why do people throw them out??!! The guitar is dirty all over. A few dings, not bad. NO fret wear or pick marks on the top!! It has OLD nylon strings, slacked. Very fine finish checking all over. The neck joint is completely loose, the fretboard is partially loose, about 3/32" heel gap. It probably spent the last 50+ years in a closet!! The neck projects .30" below the top of the bridge, hitting on the first & last frets with a .05" gap in the middle. No visible internal markings. The tuners are lightly corroded all over. The bridge is solid, no belly behind the bridge.
The saddle is low, but at least someone didn't sand the bridge lower.
The headstock is pretty clean, and dirty.
The frets look unplayed, and dirty.
A little bit of a heel gap.
Hmmm... What's that??
A small hole???
Tuners are a little rusty.
That heel gap again.
The action is a little high!!!
