I mentioned to the customer getting the FG-300 Dumpster guitar, that I have various versions of the H165 and he was interested. I checked Reverb, eBay, and didn’t find anything reasonably priced. Then I found this one on Facebook Marketplace, posted only a few hours before. A break in the side at the heel and the heel lifting, and a crack in the top below the pickguard, and more than likely needs a neck reset. Looks like lots of work. He was asking $99, I offered $60, if it’s still available. I got a response back a little while later, asking when is a good day and time to meet. We met later that day in the parking lot where he works. There isn’t much of a back story. He bought it at an auction in Burlington Vermont about 2 years ago, and it’s just been hanging around since.
It looks like it was sat or stepped on. Three cracks in the top below the pickguard, the side is cracked and separated at the lower part of the bass side heel but the side is still stuck to the heel, the heel is completely separated from the side on the treble side. About a 3/16" heel gap. There's about 3/16" of belly behind the bridge, the back of the bridge is lifted and the whole bridge tipped forward. A 2.5" long fine crack in the upper part of the lower bout. Lots of finish crazing but no other cracks in the sides. The high E string is missing and the saddle has been notched nearly to the bridge. Tuned to G (lower)Eb, A, E, C# (lower). The neck projects well into the guitar due to the neck being loose. The action is 25/64" low E & 13/32" B. That's OVER 3/8"!!! The nut action is a little high. The fretboard looks like Brazilian rosewood, black wavy grain, less pores.
The older Harmony logo, I'm assuming 1950's thru 1962. I've seen a 1963 with the script logo.
Probable Brazilian rosewood fretboard. More pics later.
The bridge is tipped forward and the top is bellied.
The older black tuner buttons.
The heel and side are separated, but the heel is still attached to the side.
On the treble side the heel is separated from the side.
The saddle was notched almost to the bridge.
Another view of the headstock.
Slightly broken brace under the top at the 3 cracks.
The bridge nut & washer are missing on the bass side!!
The date code.
