Hi, I was browsing FB marketplace for a firepit because my wife said I couldn't burn brush in our back yard and instead found a nice looking FG150 for a bargain. I drove across town to get it and was pleasantly surprised by the condition. It was pretty grimy but not beat up and the neck appears to be in good shape has a tiny bit too much relief for me when strung up but appears to be straight and doesn't show any signs of issues listed on this site. I brought it home and removed (very) old strings, cleaned it up with warm water and couple of drops of dawn and that did the trick. I also oiled the fret board and bridge, both were very dry. Very happy with how it turned out.
I was hoping someone could help with dating. There serial number is partially obscured,150(?)6504 and while I found the date stamp is pretty much useless. Best I can guess from the serial number page it seems like a 1971.
Even better with a fresh set of strings. Very playable and it sounds pretty good to me. I had a set of D'Addario 80/20 .11-.52s sitting around and I don't think I'll keep them on there. They maybe a little too bright or maybe I am just not used to the way a small bodied guitar sounds. Is it generally recommended to go with a little bit lighter strings for a guitar that is ~50 years old or can I get away with mediums?
Congrats! I'd say 1506504 was made in February 1971. That's possibly the worst stamped date code I've seen!
I normally use D'Addario Ej16 (PB Light). It took 51 years to get in the condition it is. Don't baby it. If the action is OK for you, put on whatever you like. 80/20's tend to be bright. PB's are a bit warmer.
