I have a made in Taiwan Yamaha FG 260 12 string. It has wonderful tone but the action is way too high. The only way I can play it is by using light gauge strings and tuning it down to DGCFAD and use a capo on the 2nd fret to get it in standard pitch.
I think it needs a neck re-set but do not have any idea how much that would cost or who would to go to to get that done. The rosewood bridge has bee notched a little so the strings will go over the bone saddle at an angle and not buzz. But, the saddle was lowered to the point that the B an E strings go over it with almost no angle at all.
It appears to me that the bridge could be shaved by about 1/16" and that would allow the saddle to be lowered more and the strings would also be able to then go over the saddle at a proper angle. This would be an alternative to a neck reset. Has anyone done this and had success? Any advice is welcome, and thanks in advance,
BTW I still have my red label FG350 and I took off the old original tuners and replaced them with Klusons which were a direct drop in replacement which allowed me to not remove the original peghead bushings. No new screw holes were required, but I did have to plug a couple with wood and glue as they were stripped out.
I am willing to sell off the original Yamaha tuners if anybody wants them.
