This board is next level helpful, BZ for all those who manage and contribute. Glad to be here.
I pulled the "old Yamaha" out of the closet today after not having played it for years. I thought this guitar had passed its prime, but was looking to see if I could lower the action, clean it up, make it playable again. I started thinking about where and when it was born, and did some google on reading serial numbers yada yada yada... here I am. Was looking to bounce this info off the collective and see what happens.
Attached photos show headstock, tuners, sticker, serial number and bridge. From my basic research this is a made in Taiwan red label model, and the serial number tells me it was made January 9, 1976, number 179 (busy day I guess). HOWEVER, I have also read that the serial number page that many have referenced may not be entirely correct.
My goal here is to identify the guitar's pedigree, lower the action, check the truss rod/neck alignment, re-string and teach myself some bluegrass picking. I come from 80s/90/00s hard rock, want to do something different.
Once the axe is identified, I'll be around looking for help on specs, techniques to lower string height, repair/maintenance tips, etc.
CTGull: Any chance you worked in the defense industry as a designer? We may share a common employer...

Cheers
I'm sorry I missed this!! It was made 1/9/1996. It is a modern model.
I have never worked in the defense industry, but I have worked for (and with) a few Vietnam vets. I kind of picked up a few things. And I like writing. Technical writing seemed to come naturally to me. I am very curious, and like to learn how things work, and figure out different ways of doing things.
