HIS STORY: He originally ordered a truss rod nut and wrench. But he mentioned it is playable, but the saddle is low, and asked if I could recommend anyone for a neck reset. I mentioned I’ve done 52 and only charge $300. The next day it was on it’s way to me by FEDEX.
He bought the guitar at an estate sale in 2010 in rural Michigan for $5, with the case and strap! He was there first in line and saw the case. They forgot to put a price on it, so he asked the woman at the table and she said $5. He had no idea vintage Red label Yamaha’s had such a following. He’s a working musician who uses both an Eastman and a Martin, both OMs. He likes the guitar, it’s not his main guitar, but he likes it just to play around the house. While it is playable, the saddle is very low. He sanded about a 1/16 off the bridge about 9 years ago, and there’s not much left saddle poking out.
OBSERVATIONS: The original case was packed well in the box, but there was only one tiny piece of bubble wrap on the inside, the guitar was rattling around. No obvious damage to the guitar, other than some of the blue coating in the case on the guitar. The body of the guitar is in very good condition, lacking the many scrapes and dents I normally see. The first thing I notice is the larger area of the pickguard has been reglued: and the original nut was poorly removed and replaced with a bone nut, but some of the slots look like they were filled with superglue to raise them; and the tuners have been replaced, oddly the bushings look to be original but it looks like at least 2 of them were removed and put back in because there are some chunks of the headstock damaged/missing. There was a strap button added to the treble side of the heel. The bridge pins have been replaced with translucent dark carmel colored pins. The frets look original, with some divots for the B string at the first 3 frets. The frets look to be flat topped thru the 11th fret. On the back, there are some odd “bumps” at the first 5 inches of the center seam on the heel end, like water got into it and caused it to swell.
Tuned to “D”. The nut action is good except the low E is low. The neck relief is high. The action is 7/64” both E’s. The nek projects 1/16” below the top of the bridge, with the straight edge hitting on the first & last frets and a .08” gap in the middle. The bridge is .24” thick and the saddle sticks out .07”/.09”.
The inside of the top.
The bridge plate is a bit chewed up.
Some dust bunnies.
